Stockton, California, United States witnessed a unique mass migration when hundreds of thousands of tiny frogs jumped across the road. according to CNBC– Affiliate KSL TV, witnesses and biologists were stunned by the scale. One of the witnesses, Mary Hulett, told the outlet that she was driving home from the airport when cars stopped in front of her and the road seemed to move. She saw the frogs in an area known as the “S Curves” on Silver Avenue.
“At first I thought, ‘I’m tired’ – no way. When I looked and I focused on it, I realized it was frogs or toads crossing the road,” Ms Hewlett said. KSL TV.
The road was over a mile long covered with toadstools.
“We’re talking like thousands of frogs crossing the road,” Ms Hewlett said. “Is this like Total Mageddon? What in the world is going on here?”
Chris Crockett, Utah Division of Wildlife Resources’ Central Region aquatics manager, said the creatures are likely juvenile Great Basin spadefoot frogs that have hatched around dry Rush Lake over the years.
“These juvenile frogs – often what we call metamorphs – decided now was a good time to leave their territory and migrate to these surrounding hills,” Mr Crockett told the outlet.
However, for many toads hit by cars, the migration didn’t go well.
Some passers-by said they tried to direct traffic to avoid the flowers as best they could.
