Rewa (MP):
A 34-year-old man was half-naked, punched and forced to pick up his shoes over his face in Madhya Pradesh’s Rewa district, after which the main accused and his two accomplices were arrested based on the viral video, police said on Monday.
The victim, with his hands tied behind his back, is seen pleading for mercy in the video clip, which is more than two years old.
A property dispute appears to be the primary trigger behind the crime, a police officer said.
“After seeing the video, we have arrested the prime accused Jawahar Singh (55), a member of the Gond tribe, and his two accomplices,” Rewa Superintendent of Police Vivek Singh told PTI.
He said the video, which started doing rounds on social media last week, was recorded in May 2021 at Piprahi village under Hanumana police station limits in Rewar.
While the main accused is a tribal, according to the police, the victim belongs to an upper caste.
The main accused works as a clerk in a government school and is the husband of a sarpanch of the village, the police official said.
“He abducted the other man, stripped him half-naked, tied his hands behind his back, punched him and forced him to lift shoes with his mouth,” the SP said.
An FIR was registered against Jawahar Singh and two others under various sections of the Indian Penal Code on Saturday.
The local court sent the three to judicial custody.
Recently, an incident of urinating on a tribal youth in Madhya Pradesh’s Sidhi district sparked widespread outrage after a viral video went viral.
Rewa and Sidhi districts fall under Vindhya region of MP.
