Odisha train accident: Woman comes forward to demand compensation, sets off alarm bells  Here’s why  TOI Original

The Bahanaga train tragedy has left several people unaccounted for, raising concerns about fraudulent attempts to claim bodies and compensation. A woman’s unsuccessful and fraudulent attempt to falsely identify one of the bodies as her husband has prompted the state government to take action. Chief Secretary Pradeep Kumar Jena urged the Railways and Odisha Police to deal swiftly and firmly with such fraudulent claimants. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik announced an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh for the next of kin of the deceased from Odisha, while the Prime Minister’s Office paid Rs 2 lakh ex gratia to each deceased’s family. The Railway Ministry has also assured a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the families of the victims. In response, Chief Secretary Jena stressed the need for vigilance and prompt action to deal with such cases, urging all concerned authorities to take immediate and strict action.
