Actor-filmmaker Priyankatha Laishram reacts to Bollywood talking about Manipur – ‘It’s really very depressing to watch how…’ | the times

Actor and filmmaker Priyakanta Laishram, who is known for making films on taboo subjects like child abuse, male rape, LGBTQ issues and drug menace, recently shared his views on Bollywood stars reacting to the Manipur incident. In an interview to Hindustan Times, Priyakanta said, ‘Two and a half months of complete silence is a very long time. It is truly depressing to observe how our culture and country constantly waits for some horrible event to happen before taking a stand, even if it means endangering the lives of others. It is unfortunate that Bollywood and the central government constantly turn a blind eye to what is happening in India’s Northeast and constantly overreact to what is happening in other foreign countries. While he appreciated some Bollywood stars speaking out now, he argued that it was too little, too late. ‘Over the past few months, unimaginable damage has already been done, making it impossible to implement change immediately. We should unite not just for show, but with the sincere intention of helping the ruined Manipur. But I hope more influential people will come from other states of India, who will speak for the struggling state and its citizens and support the adoption of sensible policies that will restore peace to the state’, said Laishram.
