Bhopal: ‘Environmental clearance not required’ BMC proposes Rs 247-crore flyover from pumping station Laukhedi until ByragarMP Public Works Department (PWD).

The project is located in the eco-sensitive zone of the Bhoj wetland. Bhopal’s recently released draft masterplan has included the zone in the ‘Special Environment Category’ to protect the millennia-old lake. Raja Bhoj.
“The experience from the elevated corridor saw the Singarcholi flower (connecting Lal Ghati to Raja Bhoj airport). Construction activity boomed on both sides. “Similar interventions will be disastrous for the green belt of the Upper Lake,” said a retired urban development expert.

When contacted, PWD officials did not respond. Project drawings were approved around March 2023. The new draft master plan of Bhopal was released on June 2, 2023.
The Public Works Department’s proposal also includes details of metro rail development. The proposed structure needs to be designed keeping in mind the expected loads and the provision for the metro line to pass over the elevated flyover in future.
The six-lane project with a 2.6 km flyover will also have a 2 km service lane. The flyover runs over the existing Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) corridor. The viaduct portion of the flyover will be 2.6 km and the original elevated corridor will be 2.9 km.
