Pakistanis reacted with joy and jubilation as Hamza Khan comfortably defeated Egypt’s Mohammad Zakaria in the World Junior Squash Championship 2023 on Sunday.
The country unanimously applauded the young athlete for becoming the country’s first junior squash champion since 1986.
Peshawar Salmi owner Javed Afridi congratulated Hamza and announced Rs 1 million as a “mark of appreciation” for the Salmi Foundation.
Actor Faisal Qureshi said the squash player echoes the legacy of Janshar Khan’s 1986 win.
PTI leader and former finance minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Taimur Jagra said that Hamza’s victory is a proud moment for Pakistan and a proud moment for Peshawar.
Sports broadcaster and ex Pakistan Television The host said that Hamza made the country proud. Nauman Niaz said.
He said the player’s previous win at the British Junior Open Squash Championships under-15 title was the “springboard” to today’s victory.
“A star is born,” commented cricket journalist Alia Rashid.
Sports journalist Rasheed Shakur said it had not been a “smooth journey” for Hamza.
He said that after training in America last year, the star was asked to come back and join the training camp in Islamabad and was warned of the consequences.
The political spectrum was not far behind in appreciating the young star’s decisive victory.
“Big congratulations to him for this remarkable achievement,” the ruling PML-N tweeted.
PTI, meanwhile, termed the victory an “incredible achievement”.
National Assembly Speaker Raja Pervez Ashraf and Deputy Speaker Zahid Akram Durrani jointly congratulated the star on the win.
They hoped he would continue to display such “extraordinary performances” in the future.
Jamaat Islami Karachi Ameer Naeemur Rehman also congratulated the actor.
