Eight children drowned in separate incidents in Seoni, Bhind and Umaria districts of Madhya Pradesh in the last 24 hours, police said on Monday. In Seoni, Kurai police station in-charge Nandakishore Dhurve said four boys aged 5 to 10 years drowned on Sunday evening when they went to bathe in a pond near their house in Dhobisara village, 25 km from the district headquarters.

He said that the family started searching after the children did not return home.

Around 6:30 in the evening, the children’s clothes and bodies were found floating in the water near the pool, officials said. He also said that the bodies were handed over to the relatives after post-mortem.

In Bhind, two cousin brothers, aged 11 and 14, drowned while bathing in a pond in Kichol village on Sunday afternoon, Umri police station in-charge Ravindra Sharma said.

The villagers tried to save the boys and pulled them out of the waterhole. They rushed the boys to a nearby hospital but doctors declared them brought dead, he said. In Umaria district, a 6-year-old boy and his 9-year-old sister drowned in a rainwater-filled pit in Sehra village on Sunday afternoon, Kotwali police station in-charge Raghavendra Tiwari said. The child went to wash his hands in the pit of the farm and slipped into the water. His sister, who saw him drowning, entered the waterhole to save him, but both drowned, officials said.
