Astronomers recently identified asteroid 2023 FW13 as a quasi-satellite, a space rock orbiting the Sun close to Earth.

A quasi-satellite was discovered near the Earth: it travels with our planet for more than 2 years

The space rock has been named 2023 FW13 and is considered a “quasi-satellite” of Earth. It orbits the Sun in the same time frame as Earth, but is only slightly affected by our planet’s gravity. 2023 FW13 is estimated to be 15 meters in diameter. The quasi-satellite orbits the Earth at a distance of about 14 million km from our planet. For comparison, the diameter of the Moon is 3 km, and the Earth’s natural satellite is 474,364 km away from it at its closest point in its orbit.
