Port Blair: The expanding Andaman airport saw part of the false ceiling come off in high winds after it was taken down to allow CCTV cameras to be fixed.
Officials said the false ceiling in front of the ticketing counter outside the terminal building has been removed for arranging CCTV works and final deployment.
The airport’s new integrated terminal, which is yet to be operational, was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi a few days ago.
“This is a minor incident. The work of installing CCTV cameras was going on. Wiring for such cameras has to be done behind the panels and there may be some troubleshooting issues. We have addressed the issue and resolved the issue,” an airport official told PTI.
Prime Minister Modi inaugurated the new integrated terminal building of Veer Savarkar Airport in Andaman and Nicobar Islands on July 18.
In a statement, the airport authorities said in a statement that the false ceiling in front of the ticketing counter outside the terminal building has been removed for adjustment and final alignment of CCTV works.
“On the night of July 22, there was a strong wind which lifted the false ceiling from below as the wind could not escape to the ticketing counter area.
“Due to this, about 10 square meters of false ceiling was damaged, but it was repaired. The false ceiling inside the terminal building is intact and no installations inside the terminal were damaged,” the airport said in a statement.
Congress leader Jairam Ramesh took to Twitter about the incident and said the Prime Minister will inaugurate anything these days – even if it is unfinished or substandard infrastructure.
The terminal building is designed like a shell, depicting the natural surroundings of the archipelago.
Another official said that the Airport Authority of India has constructed a new terminal building at a cost of Rs 707.73 crore due to increased passenger traffic.
The new building, with a total area of 40,837 square meters, will have the capacity to handle 1,200 passengers during peak hours and 4 million passengers annually.
