Tall, short or lean: Expert explains how the shape of your skeleton affects health

Skeletal proportions affect everything from sitting or standing position. For this study, researchers studied data from more than 30,000 people aged 40-80. Using AI, they analyzed everyone’s body X-rays and genetic test results.

New Delhi: The shape of the skeleton may not seem like an important aspect of health and well-being, but it is actually quite different. According to scientists, people with tall and long bodies are more prone to back pain. Also, people with wide hips are more likely to struggle with osteoporosis than normal.
People with long femurs are more likely to develop arthritis, knee pain and other common knee problems, according to a new study by experts at the University of Texas. These disorders, experts say, are caused by biochemical stresses on the joints for life.

Skeletal proportions affect everything from sitting or standing position. For this study, researchers studied data from more than 30,000 people aged 40-80. Using AI, they analyzed everyone’s body X-rays and genetic test results.

So far, 145 regions have been associated with genes that regulate skeletal development, of which only a few are known. A long torso is thought to be a predictor of back pain, wide hips can cause osteoporosis, shin bones can cause knee problems, and long thighs can lead to arthritis.

The only link between hip and knee osteoporosis is the high knee joint. In most cases, the shape of the skeleton is mostly genetic – 30 to 50 percent. This means that genes have an important role to play and have ultimate consequences. These results appeared in the journal Science.
