The state of Assam went on high alert after the release of water from the Kurichu Dam in Bhutan, the flood situation in Assam worsened on Friday. The severe floods affected 17 districts of the state affecting around 67,000 people in the state. The water level of major rivers including the Brahmaputra continues to rise, flowing above the danger mark at several places, an official bulletin said.

Among the total districts, 17 were worst affected including Baxa, Biswanath, Bongaigaon, Chirang, Dhemaji, Dhubri, Dibrugarh, Golaghat, Jorhat, Kokrajhar, Lakhimpuit, Majuliu, Nagaon, Nalbari, Sibsagar, Tamulpur and Tinsukia.

To provide shelter to the displaced flood victims, the district authorities have set up 78 relief camps and distribution centers where 4,531 inmates have taken shelter in the camps.

Apart from damage to property and displacement of people, floods in Assam also damaged 2,770 hectares of cropland. Additionally, 49,535 animals were also affected. Majuli dam and 18 roads in Barpeta, Chirang, Dhubri, Golaghat, Lakhimpur, Majuli, Sibsagar and Sonitpur districts were also damaged due to severe floods. Apart from the destruction of roads and embankments, extensive erosion was also reported from Barpeta, Bongaigaon, Dhubri, Kokrajhar, Sibsagar and Tamulpur.
