Adani Group commissions India’s first transnational power project to supply electricity to Bangladesh;  Check the details

Adani Group on July 15 announced the commissioning of India’s first transnational project at Godda in Jharkhand to supply electricity to the Bangladesh electricity grid. Chairman Gautam Adani met Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in Dhaka on Saturday after full load power supply to Bangladesh from Godday Group’s Ultra Super-Critical Thermal Power Plant (USCTPP) started.

Godda marks USCTPP, the port-to-power conglomerate’s foray into transnational power projects. Adani Power Jharkhand Limited (APJL), a wholly owned subsidiary of Adani Power Limited, will supply 100 per cent of the electricity generated from the plant to other countries.

The company said it had successfully completed the reliable capacity test for the Godda plant on July 12 – a mandatory requirement under the Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with the Bangladesh Power Development Board, executed in November 2017 for 25 years.

On 6 April, the first unit of 800 MW capacity of the Godda plant started commercial operation on 26 June the second unit of 800 MW capacity. APJL will supply 1,496 MW from Godda USCTPP under PPA through a 400 KV dedicated transmission system. According to a statement from the Adani Group, Bangladesh is connected to the grid.

The USCTPP was commissioned in a record time of 42 months, including laying a 105 km long 400 kV double circuit transmission line, construction of a private railway line and implementation of an extensive water pipeline from the Ganga.

Gautam Adani said in a tweet: “Honored to meet the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina, on the commissioning and handover of the 1600 MW Ultra Supercritical Godda Power Plant. I salute the dedicated teams of India and Bangladesh who braved Covid to commission the plant in a record time of three-and-a-half years.”

Electricity supplied from Godda will benefit Bangladesh’s power situation by replacing expensive electricity generated using liquid fuels. According to the statement, this transition will help Bangladesh reduce the average cost of purchased electricity.

Godda Power Plant is the first in India to have 100 percent Flue Gas Desulphurization (FGD), Selective Catalytic Converter (SCR) and zero water emissions in line with the prescribed norms for eco-friendly operations. Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, Government of India, Adani Group said in its statement.
