In 1922 Dr. Helmi moved to Germany to study medicine. After that, he completed his training at the Robert Koch Hospital, also known as Krankenhaus Mobit, in Berlin. He was then appointed as the Head of the Department of Urology. However, when Adolf Hitler came to power in 1933, all Jewish staff at the hospital were dismissed. A few years later, he was discriminated against and persecuted by the Nazis. Helmick also lost his position.
