Asia Cup 2023: Pakistan’s hybrid model rejected, men in green may pull out of continental tournament – report

Pakistan may pull out of the event after three cricket boards rejected the PCB’s hybrid model to host the Asia Cup. There may also be a situation where the tournament is not held. It has been decided to hold the continental tournament in September.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has reportedly suffered another setback as Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Afghanistan rejected the hybrid model for the 2023 Asia Cup. The PCB had proposed a hybrid model to conduct the continental tournament. In this model, the Men in Green Green would have hosted the tournament in Pakistan. But the players would have gone to a neutral venue to face India.
PTI reported that this model was rejected and Pakistan may now withdraw from the tournament. In October 2022, the BCCI announced that Team India would not travel to Pakistan for the Asia Cup. PCB came up with a hybrid model to retain hosting rights but its efforts went in vain.

“The meeting of the Asian Cricket Council Executive Board members virtually is just a formality. Otherwise a proper meeting will be called later this month. But the PCB now knows that Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Afghanistan do not support the hybrid model proposal in the Asia Cup,” PTI reported quoting a source.

The report adds that the Asia Cup may also be canceled this year as there will be no India-Pak matches. “There is every possibility that the Asia Cup will not take place this year as without matches between Pakistan and India broadcasters are unlikely to offer the same amount to the ACC involving Pakistan,” PTI reported quoting a source.

The latest update also sees Pakistan pulling out of the 2023 World Cup. The PCB had threatened to boycott the global event if India did not travel to Pakistan for the Asia Cup. An official announcement regarding the Asia Cup and Pakistan’s participation in the World Cup is expected to come out soon.

Team India’s decision to pull out of the 2023 Asia Cup is expected to have a major impact on Pakistan’s chances of hosting the 2025 Champions Trophy. The ICC event may be moved outside the Asian country.
