As air travel recovers from the pandemic, bad behavior among airline passengers is on the rise, a new study has found.

A new analysis by the International Air Transport Association shows that incidents of unruly passengers on flights increased by 47% from 2021 to 2022, from one incident in 835 flights to one incident in 568 flights.

While incidents of physical abuse often drew attention, the most common incidents were “disobedience, verbal abuse and intoxication,” the report said. Other misdemeanors include bringing outside alcoholic beverages into the cabin, not wearing seat belts, and overpacking luggage.

Incidents of physical violence occurred on 1 in every 17,200 flights, a small fraction, but a 61% increase from the previous year. By comparison, according to the National Weather Service, a person’s lifetime chance of being struck by lightning is 1 in 15,300.

Hollywood stars gave permission for the strike

Actors represented by the Hollywood union SAG-AFTRA voted Monday night to authorize a strike unless a new contract with major studios, streamers and production companies is reached by June 30.

The strike authorization was overwhelmingly approved, with nearly 98% of the 65,000 members voting.

The Writers Guild of America, the guild that represents 160,000 screen actors, broadcast journalists, anchors and stunt performers, began talks with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers on Wednesday, a month after going on strike over its own dispute. Using AMPTP.

If the actors’ union ultimately goes ahead with the strike, it will be limited to television and film production; News broadcasting operations will not be directly affected.
