Apple has announced the winners of the 2023 Apple Design Awards
At WWDC 23, winners are recognized for excellence in innovation, ingenuity and technological achievement in app and game design.
Today, Apple proudly unveiled the winners of its annual Apple Design Awards, celebrating 12 best-in-class apps and games. This year’s winners, spanning development teams around the world, delivered creative and innovative apps with great design.
Each app or game is recognized in six different categories for inclusion, enjoyment, entertainment, interaction, social impact, visuals, graphics and innovation. Winners were selected from 36 finalists, all of whom demonstrate outstanding technical achievement.
“Apps and games are integral to how we live, work and play. At Apple, we love to recognize outstanding developers who reflect incredible creativity and design excellence,” said Susan Prescott, Apple’s vice president of Worldwide Developer Relations. “We look forward to celebrating this year’s Apple Design Award winners for creating thoughtful app experiences and engaging gameplay that empower and entertain users everywhere.”

App: Universe – Website Builder
Developer: Universe Exploration Company (United States)
By reducing complexity and removing barriers to entry, Universe makes website building possible for everyone. The app empowers people to create their perfect online storefront, artist home, community group page, or personal web presence, making the universe accessible to as many people as possible, while implementing features like dynamic type and voiceover.
Developer: Lyke Studios (Thailand)
With cross-generational appeal, Stitch., an Apple Arcade title, brings its users the quiet and meditative art of embroidery. As the game progresses, the designs increase in difficulty while the background music lulls players into a state of relaxation. With support for multiple languages and custom accessibility options for people with color blindness, vision impairment, and motion sensitivity, everyone can join in on the fun.
Finalists for this category include Transreport’s Passenger Assistance, Alessandro Di Maio’s Annie, Clemens Strasser’s Antique Board Game Collection and Fein Games GmbH’s Finding Hannah.
Fun and entertainment
Winners in this category deliver memorable, engaging and satisfying experiences enhanced by Apple technologies.
Developer: Duolingo, Inc. (United States)
More than a decade since its launch, Duolingo continues to expand its holistic approach to language learning through a redesigned experience and the introduction of new courses for endangered, indigenous, and imaginary languages. Users come for the expanding catalog of dialogues, and stay for the fun characters and fun gamified experience, including quests, challenges, and leaderboards to engage learners.

Developer: Evan Kice (United States)
A vintage pixel adventure with a contemporary twist, Afterplace is an unforgettable indie role-playing game with a modern edge that balances nostalgia, dry humor and exploration. It’s lovingly designed for mobile and is controlled with swipes and taps instead of virtual buttons. Clever onboarding grounds players in the game’s world, and its intuitive one-handed control system makes it easy and fun to discover Afterplace’s quirky surprises and hidden rewards.

Developer: Flight LLC (United States)
Flighty provides users with detailed flight maps, airport navigation and delay prediction – all through a beautifully designed app experience. With key information most needed, an intuitive interface and comprehensive live maps, flight navigation is made hassle-free. The app thoughtfully integrates Apple technology, including Siri Shortcuts, Apple Maps, Live Actions and more, to protect passengers during every part of the journey.
Developer: Afterburn (Poland)
Interacting with Railbound delights in its simplicity, including navigating through menus with words, points, and an onboarding experience that remarkably forgoes. Undoing and redoing mistakes is a breeze thanks to the game’s clever designs. With pristine animation and colorful visuals, Railbound is a polished puzzle that’s easy to pick up and hard to put down.

Winners in this category improve lives in meaningful ways and shed light on critical issues.
Developer: Headspace (United States)
Bringing mindfulness to the masses, Headspace’s thoughtful designs are evident throughout its minimalist user interface, engaging video content, and signature illustrations. Users can choose from a wide variety of voices to guide them through the app’s extensive catalog of content to suit a variety of needs, from longer guided sessions to five-minute clarity breaks. The app’s Apple Watch integration also brings a moment of focus to one’s wrist anytime.
Developer: HandyGames (Germany)
In this side-scroller game, Endling casts players as a fox struggling to navigate a land scorched by environmental disaster and human impact. Players are given the opportunity to develop an immediate empathy and connection with the main character. The game’s simple controls ensure that story remains the focus of gameplay rather than interactions.

Visuals and graphics
Winners in this category feature stunning imagery, expertly drawn interfaces, and high-quality animations that lend to a distinctive and cohesive theme.
App: Any distance
Developer: Any distance inc. (United States)
Any Distance is a design-forward workout tracker that provides users with shareable and dynamic graphics. The app takes full advantage of real-time activities and Apple Watch integrations to collect and present fitness data, including not only traditional exercises like running and cycling, but also wheelchair exercise, stroller runs, walks and leisurely bike rides. Collectable in-app medals and an encouraging social community keep people entertained and motivated.
Game: Resident Evil Village
Developer: CAPCOM Co., Ltd. (Japan)
This horror adventure game features masterful visual details powered by Apple Silicon, Promo, Metal 3, and extended dynamic range. From the creepy castle of Resident Evil Village to its dilapidated factories, the graphics are the most realistic and atmospheric ever delivered on the Mac.
Finalists for this category include Gentler Streak Health Fitness by Gentler Stories LLC; Reveo by Forge and Form GmbH; Ending by Blizzard Entertainment, Inc., NetEase, Inc. and HandyGames.

App: SwingVision: The AI Tennis App

With the combined powers of artificial intelligence and neural engine, SwingVision acts as a tennis coach that can assist in all aspects of one’s game. SwingVision’s advanced video-tracking capabilities help assess form with clarity, highlight strengths and suggest areas for improvement. Data is taken not only from the camera, but also via Apple Watch integration.
Game: Marvel Snap
Developer: Second Supper (China)
MARVEL SNAP features stunning animations and delightful haptics that perfectly convey the personalities of each of the multiverse characters. This collectible card game redefines the genre with its fast-paced gameplay and innovative “snap” mechanic that instantly doubles the stakes and introduces new layers of strategy to the game.
