Dangerous heat will scorch much of the US this week

Much of the country will remain warm this week. The large heat dome affecting much of the southern US will not leave soon. In fact, it is going to increase its scope.

What you need to know

  • The heat dome over the south will expand this week
  • Dangerously hot temperatures and heat index values will affect a good portion of the US
  • Heat-related illnesses are likely to increase in many places

Much of the country will see dangerous heat this week as a severe heat dome in the south expands north and east.

Warmer temperatures and heat index values will spread across the Mississippi River Basin and Midwest on Monday and Tuesday and spread to the East Coast during the second half of the week.

The heat will intensify across the Southwest at the start of the workweek, where highs will reach the 100s, spreading across southern California’s inland valleys and high deserts into Texas and parts of the Southern Plains.

Temperatures will warm well into the 90s across much of the East, Deep South and Southeast, but heat index values will reach near triple digits throughout the week.

By mid-to-late week, 90-degree temperatures will dominate the eastern two-thirds of the country.

High temperatures could break or tie records for parts of the Northeast on Thursday and Friday.

Parts of Florida, Texas and the Plains remain under heat advisories through at least Tuesday evening, while extreme heat warnings are still in effect for parts of southern Arizona and California.

Additional heat alerts are likely to be in effect this week as heat expands north and east.

Regardless, the combination of hot temperatures and high humidity can increase the threat of heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
