24-year-old right-arm pacer Shivam Mavi has opened up about being benched by Gujarat Titans (GT) for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 season.
Mavi was part of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the IPL from 2018 to 2022 before launching the franchise. He was acquired by Gujarat Titans (GT) for Rs 6 crore in the IPL 2023 Mega Auction. However, to everyone’s surprise, the young pacer warmed the bench throughout the season.

In an interview with News18, Shivam Mavi revealed that he was bowling well in the nets and was fully fit to compete, but he didn’t get a chance to play.
“Mai to apna acha bowling kar raha tha, but I could not play a single game. From my end, I was 110% fit and was bowling consistently in the nets. I used to talk to the management and they told me to be ready. That’s all I can do – make sure my preparations are right and I’m ready for every match,” Shivam Mavi said.

Shivam Mav was asked more about getting on India’s radar in the busy 2023 calendar. The 24-year-old said it is important to give his best every chance he gets because people criticize even the batting greats. Like Virat Kohli if he loses 2-3 matches.
“I see every match as an opportunity. Every match is crucial nowadays. Virat bhai 2-3 match nahi karte tho log unke bhee peeche lag jate hai. Ye to run nahi kar raha, ye to wo ho gaya hai, ye ho gaya hai. You have such a great example in front of you. Therefore, one must be on top of their game at every opportunity that comes their way. I am not putting too much pressure because of this but taking it as an opportunity,” said Shivam Mavi.
Shivam Mavi has played a total of 32 matches in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and has taken 30 wickets. He made it his own India Made his T20I debut against Sri Lanka in January 2023 and has taken 7 wickets in 6 games so far. He was recently named in the Indian team for the 2023 Asian Games.
