Director Kedar Shinde’s Marathi film Baipan Bhari Deva was a success at the box office. Free Press Journal Catch up with the filmmaker for an exclusive chat.
Produced by Jio Studios, Baipan Bhari Deva stars Rohini Hattangadi, Vandana Gupte, Sukanya Mane, Shilpa Navalkar, Suchitra Bandekar and Deepa Parab. The film celebrated sisterhood and created waves across the Indian film industry with its phenomenal box office performance. The film collected 37.35 crores in two weeks.
Opening up about the success of his film, Kedar shares, “It’s nothing new for me. I have the legacy of my grandfather Shahir Sabal. So success is all right for me. I have to work harder. I have staged Marathi’s landmark plays.
Kedar’s film Maharashtra Sahir was pulled from the theaters by The Kerala Story, which released only in its first week. When asked if he has any regrets, he shares, “I was a little hurt. Karma is there. In just two months, the film My Baipan Bhari Deva was successful and the Hindi film Ko Paar Karke Wo Age Nikal Gayi was successful. Abhi marathi film ke hindi movies shows ke show se jyada hai. I am happy.”
He had earlier directed the Hindi film Toh Baat Pakki starring Tabu. When asked how he felt working with the actress, he said, “It was a great experience. She is a basic actor. She never struck me that I am a Marathi director and a new Hindi director.
When asked why he didn’t try his luck in Hindi films, he said, “Honestly, I never went and asked for a job. I want to do Hindi films. It’s not in my nature. I feel that someone will see my work and call me to direct a Hindi film.
When asked if there is a dearth of writers and would he ever helm a Hindi project again, Pat replied, “There is no dearth of writers in Marathi. I feel Hindi filmmakers also have great content that gets noticed on OTT. But I feel that Hindi films depend on stars. Sahi Re Sahi, I wrote this movie in Hindi. But most producers wanted me to sign a hero named by them. Only then can we do sahi re sahi. It was in 2010/11 that I came to know about Hindi cinema with star value. I am happy to work comfortably in Marathi films. I am ready to do Hindi films. I feel producers know my work and through my work I will get an opportunity to work in Hindi films,” he says.
Asked why Hindi films are not doing well now, he said, “Films succeed when Hindi producers fully agree to put the reins in our hands. It’s a matter of manufacturers wanting us to work according to their terms and conditions. I have produced and directed this film. There has been no interaction from Jio.
