Imphal:

A seventh accused has been arrested in connection with a horrifying video of two women being paraded naked by a mob in Manipur that surfaced online, police said. The accused was arrested from Thoubal district on Monday.

The video of these two women has caused widespread condemnation in all quarters. A tribal organization in Manipur has alleged that two women were gang-raped in a field.

The Indigenous Tribal Leaders Forum (ITLF) alleged that the incident took place on May 4 in Kangpokpi district, 35 km from the state capital Imphal. However, despite a First Information Report (FIR) being lodged in Kangpokpi, the police say the incident took place in another district.

Police made the first arrest on Thursday, July 20, a day after a 26-second video of the incident surfaced online. Three more were arrested later that day. The fifth accused arrested on Saturday is a 19-year-old and the sixth person taken into custody is a minor, police said.

The horrific incident took place a day after violence erupted between the Meitei and Kuki tribes in Manipur over their demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status. The violence in the northeastern state has so far claimed over 120 lives and displaced thousands.

Clashes in Manipur have rocked the proceedings of the Monsoon Session of Parliament. A group of opposition MPs staged a protest in front of Mahatma Gandhi’s statue in the Parliament building, demanding that the government allow a debate on the communal conflict in the state.

Since the monsoon session began on Thursday, opposition leaders have been demanding free and uninterrupted debate on the Manipur issue without any interruption.

“Our demand is that the Prime Minister will come home and make a statement. We are ready to discuss that statement. You are talking outside but not inside, it is an insult to Parliament. It is a serious matter,” said Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge.

Responding to the opposition’s allegations, the BJP claimed that the opposition was avoiding a debate on Manipur and criticized its “deafening silence” on violence against women in other states.
