Witnesses have claimed a strange ‘dust devil’ weather phenomenon was caught on film in the UK after a boy in a Zorb was ‘thrown 15m into the sky’.

A nine-year-old boy has been taken to hospital following an accident caused by sudden and dramatic winds on Sunday. The incident took place at the Southport Food and Drink Festival and the Zorb was seen flying into the air.

An air ambulance was called to help the boy, while crews responded by holding down other sorbets with children at the crowded event. The attractions are part of the offerings at the annual festival in Victoria Park.

Footage of what some called a “mini tornado” was shared on social media after the incident, widely believed to show a ‘dust devil’ – also known as ‘Willy Willy’.

According to the Met Office, these phenomena are “vortexes of upwardly swirling, dusty air that can vary in height from a few feet to over 1,000”.

They are usually several meters in diameter at the base, then taper for some distance before expanding again. LancsLive reports.

Witnesses at the Southport Food and Drink Festival said it was a “freak weather” phenomenon which saw the boy hit 20ft in the air.
