‘MS Dhoni could have played for India…’: Wasim Akram’s bold claim | Cricket

Three years after his retirement from international cricket, MS Dhoni still remains a hot property (if not the hottest) in the Indian Premier League. And why wouldn’t he be? In the three IPL editions since his international retirement, Dhoni has led Chennai Super Kings to two titles – and the IPL 2023 win is a record-equalling fifth title. What more? Batting at 7 and 8 this year, Dhoni scored at a strike rate of 181 – his best ever. Yes, he didn’t bat enough balls or score heaps of runs, but he made an impact whenever he came to bat. Isn’t that the role of the finisher?

Wasim Akram praised MS Dhoni

After Dhoni’s brilliant run for CSK in IPL 2023, which is believed to be his last in the tournament, the legendary cricketer has announced that he will try to make a comeback next year for his fans. With the form and fitness he has shown despite a knee injury throughout the tournament, no one will complain if he leads CSK again in the next IPL. But does this mean that Dhoni has retired from international cricket too early? Could he have given Team India at least one year?

Former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram feels that maybe Dhoni could have played for India for a little longer, but he made the right decision to call it quits in August 2020. Remember, Dhoni’s last match for India was in the 2019 ODI World Cup. He announced his retirement a year later, keeping everyone guessing.

“Given his performances, he could have played for India if he wanted to. But he retired at the right time, that’s why Dhoni is Dhoni,” Akram told Sportskeeda. The legendary Pacer felt that Dhoni will come back next year. “I think he will come back even stronger next year.”

When asked why he thinks so, he explained: “He has experience, calmness and is very fit physically. Most importantly, he has passion to play. No matter how fit you are, if you don’t have passion, you can’t come up with performances.”

“He is physically fit and has not sat out any match (in IPL 2023). After a certain age, a comeback is difficult. But knowing Dhoni, if he has that passion, he will practice. Match practice is very important, but I am sure he knows what he is doing.

Dhoni can take any team to the final and win: Wasim Akram

The former Pakistan captain described Dhoni as “a gem of a cricketer”. “He is a gem of a cricketer, a gem of a captain. Winning five IPLs with one team is a big deal. It is such a big tournament. There are 10 teams and you have to play 14 matches each to qualify (for the playoffs). They started slowly but you give Dhoni any team and he takes them to the final and wins.

“CSK, five titles is the dream. They have become a legendary team, that too in one of the biggest and toughest tournaments in world cricket.

“Whenever Dhoni retires from cricket, I am sure he will remain with CSK as an advisor or president or whatever the word is. I don’t think Dhoni and CSK will part ways,” added Akram.
