India’s Murali Sreesankar has been in decent form this year and is one of the best long jumpers of the year. At the 2023 Asian Athletics Championships, he not only won the silver medal with a jump of 8.37m, but also made the cut for the Paris Olympics, where the cut was set at 8.27m.
Meanwhile, Chinese Taipei’s Yu Tang Lin won the gold with a jump of 8.40m (+0.3), while Sreesankar got the silver with 8.37m (-1.1). Mingkun Zhang of China finished third with a jump of 8.08m. Not only that, the Indian jumper had five jumps of more than 8 meters which is a rare sight.
That makes him the first track & field athlete to qualify for the Olympics. Prior to this, Sreesankar, a career-best 8.41m in the qualification round of the National Inter-State Championships held last month and ranked second in the world, had qualified for the Budapest World Championships in August.
Not only that, Sreesankar also won a historic bronze medal at the Paris Diamond League with a jump of 8.09m.
