Oppenheimer opened its first weekend in India at Rs. 57 crores. Although there was a slight dip in Sunday collections, this is a common trend for Hollywood films as business slows down in big centers on Sunday nights. The decline is offset by the Hindi edition growing on Sundays in smaller centres, but those with limited Hindi edition business will see a Sunday decline, same with Oppenheimer.
As of opening day, Oppenheimer now holds the 7th highest opening weekend or 3 days total for a Hollywood film. The weekend record list is slightly skewed as some films had mid-week launches instead of the traditional Friday, some of which had higher first-three-day biz, and some had higher Friday-Sunday totals. On both counts, Oppenheimer’s debut makes it Hollywood’s seventh-biggest opening in India.
In India, the biggest Hollywood hits are mainly action-adventure franchise films, and these numbers are unimaginable for a 3-hour talkie-drama. Credit goes to Christopher Nolan, the director of the film, which has an enthusiastic fan following in India. However, even after that, he never produced this kind of number, especially in terms of openings. The opening weekend numbers were four times that of his last mainstream release, Dunkirk. In fact, Oppenheimer is already the director’s highest grosser in India, just three days after its release, surpassing his previous best of Rs. 55.50 crores and The Dark Knight Rises. Interstellar 50 crores. The film has had incredible advance sales in the IMAX format, with sold-out shows all the way through August. The movie should comfortably cross crores. 100 crore gross mark and may challenge Fast X for the highest grossing Hollywood film in India this year.
Oppenheimer’s box office collection at the Indian box office is:
Friday: Rs. 17.50 crores
Saturday: Rs. 20.25 crores
Sunday: Rs. 19.50 crores
Total: Rs. 57.25 crores
India proved to be Oppenheimer’s best-performing international market, with $7 million for the weekend. This places India as the film’s second-highest-grossing foreign market, behind the United Kingdom, which earned $14 million. Despite the benefit of a four- to five-day weekend, India’s performance was better than big Hollywood markets like France, Australia and Germany. When ticket sales are considered, it gets even better, with over 2.20 million admissions, India surpassing even the United Kingdom (1.10 million).
