India and the UAE have agreed to major economic cooperation and decided to set up an IIT campus in Abu Dhabi during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official visit to the Gulf nation today.

India and the UAE today agreed to promote the use of local currencies for cross-border transactions and interlink the Unified Payment Interface (UPI) with the Gulf country’s Instant Payment Platform (IPP).

Prime Minister Modi flew to Abu Dhabi from France this morning and held talks with UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who welcomed him at the airport on his arrival.

The Prime Minister also said that India-UAE trade has grown by 20% since the two countries signed the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement last year. His comments came after his meeting with the President of the United Arab Emirates.

He also said he received the love of a brother from Mr Al Nahyan and Indians saw him as a “true friend”. “You have made a big contribution to the way the relationship between our countries has expanded. Every person in India sees you as a true friend,” he told the President.

He noted that the UAE will take the lead in COP-28, the United Nations Climate Change Conference, this year and he has decided to participate in it. He also met COP28 president-designate Sultan Al Jaber and assured India’s full support for the UAE’s chairmanship of the climate conference.
