The abduction of a Scheduled Caste woman and the recovery of her bullet-riddled body days later have sparked political tension in Karauli in constituency Rajasthan, with both the Bharatiya Janata Party and Mayawati’s Bahujan Samaj Party blaming the Ashok Gehlot government for the deterioration of law and order. in the state
The BJP is staging a dharna outside the hospital where the bodies are kept. The issue was even raised in the Rajasthan Assembly on Friday by opposition legislators who sought a response from the government over the incident.
The 19-year-old woman was allegedly abducted by four men from her home on July 12. His body was recovered from a well yesterday.
The victim’s mother complained of police negligence in the incident. “We were sleeping when three to four men came at around 3 am. They picked him up with rags on his face. I must have screamed and cried, but by then they had taken him away. We went to the police station but they refused to file a case. They said Nothing will come of filing my case, instead I have been asked to leave,” said the victim’s mother.
Police have so far arrested one person and search teams are looking for other accused in the case. “We have got a lead in the case. We have spoken to the victim’s mother and asked if she suspects anyone. She has not named anyone yet. An FIR has been lodged,” said a senior police officer.
BJP’s Rajya Sabha MP Kirodi Lal Meena, who is leading the dharna, demanded strict action against the culprits and compensation for the families of the victims.
Former Chief Minister Bashundhara Raje tweeted, “The incident of burning the body of a college going Dalit girl with acid found in a water well is heartbreaking. The matter seems suspicious. The administration should investigate the matter from all angles and take strict action against her. The culprits.”
Congress leader Sachin Pilot demanded the administration to “thoroughly investigate this very sensitive matter and take strictest action against the culprits and bring them to justice”.
Karauli SP Mamata Gupta said, “The post-mortem of the victim girl has been conducted. The cause of death appears to be gunshot injury.” He said, forensic experts will verify the rape allegations.
The police official added that officials are negotiating with the family members for compensation and other demands.
