In an important statement on religious conversions in the Northeast, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma today said that a trend of conversions has been observed among many tribal and tribal communities. He said, as a result, their traditional beliefs and practices have been undermined.

Mr. Sarma said that his government is committed to protect the culture of the tribals and that no one should take advantage of them and convert to another religion by fraud.

In Article 25 of the Constitution, Mr. Sarma said it gives the right to freely practice, preach and propagate a religion of one’s choice, but it does not allow religious conversion through any form of enticement and enticement.

Mr. Sarma said the trend of conversion among many tribal and tribal communities in Assam has undermined their traditional beliefs and practices.
