Port of Spain (Trinidad and Tobago), July 24 (ANI): India’s new opening pair of captain Rohit Sharma and Yashaswi Jaiswal created history on Sunday as they became the highest partnership in a two-match Test series.
Rohit-Jaiswal achieved this during India’s second Test against the West Indies at Port of Spain.
In the match, Jaiswal and Rohit put on a partnership of 139 runs in the first innings. They were chasing a partnership of 98 runs in the second innings.
Combining this with their opening partnership of 229 runs in the first Test in the first innings, they added a total of 466 runs as an opening pair, the most by an Indian opening pair in a two-match Test series.
Overall, the record is held by Graeme Smith and Neil McKenzie, who added 479 runs as an opening pair in a two-Test series against Bangladesh in 2008, including an opening stand of 415 runs, which is still the highest opening partnership in a Test match.
The highest opening partnership by an Indian pair in a series was Sunil Gavaskar and Chetan Chauhan’s 537 against Australia in 1979-80. Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir (477 against Pakistan, 2005) are next.

Rohit-Jaiswal batted at a run-rate of 8.28 in the second innings, the second-highest run-rate for an opening pair that lasted at least 50 runs. The highest run rate by an opening pair is held by England’s Marcus Trescothie and Michael Warne who batted at a run rate of 10 against Sri Lanka in 2002.
India declared their second innings at 181/2 thanks to Ishan Kishan (52*) and Shubman Gill (29*). With a lead of 364 runs, Windies have a target of 365 runs to win. Rohit Sharma (57) and Yashaswi Jaiswal (38) also put in quick performances for India.
Earlier, in reply to India’s first innings score of 438, WI were bowled out for just 255 runs. WI trailed by 183 runs at that stage.
Captain Craig Braithwaite was the top scorer for West Indies with 75 runs. Alik Athanase (37), Tagnarine Chanderpaul (33) and Kirk McKenzie (32) also scored respectably for the West Indies.
Mohammad Siraj picked India’s bowlers at 5/60. Mukesh Kumar and Ravindra Jadeja both took one wicket and Ravichandran Ashwin.
