Sangeeta Phogat, who was one of the six wrestlers who protested against WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh at Jantar Mantar, won a bronze medal in the non-Olympic 59kg category in the six-member non-Olympic 59kg category at the Hungary Ranking Series tournament on Saturday. Sangeeta started with a crushing loss by fall and bounced back with a win in her second bout. Although she lost in the semi-finals, she won the bronze play-off 6-2 against young Hungarian Viktoria Borsos, the U-20 World Championship silver medalist. Sangeeta started off with a loss against America’s Jennifer Page Rogers, who won the national championship in the 62kg category last year.
The bout lasted just 80 seconds and the American retreated with an onslaught of right legs that led to a take-down and multiple rolls. Eventually the American was forced to turn Sangeeta away.
In her next match against Brenda Olivia Raina of America, the Indian managed to rustle up and was quick in her movement. Going into the break with a 4-2 lead, she held on to eventually win the match with technical excellence.

A six-wrestler draw with one win and one loss put her in the semifinals against Poland’s Magdalena Ursula Glodek.
Sangita initiated double-leg attacks but lacked the power to convert those moves into points. Yet she led twice, first 2-0 and then 4-2m, but Glodek’s counter-attacking moves were enough to cruise to a close 6-4 victory.
In the bronze play-off against local favorite Borzos, Sangeetha came out on top with a takedown move. The Hungarian fought back to make it 2-2, but Sangita soon launched a swift attack.
Borzos put up a good defense but Sangita broke it for 4-2.
Sangeeta did not lose a single point in the second period and added two points to win the bronze.
