TATA IPL 2023, Match 56 KKR Vs RR – Match Report
Records were shattered in Kolkata as Rajasthan Royals (RR) climbed to the third spot in the Tata Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 points table with a 9-wicket victory over Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Eden Gardens on Thursday.
Yuzvendra Chahal’s four-wicket haul and Yashaswi Jaiswal’s record half-century led Rajasthan Royals to a resounding victory.
Chasing 150 to win, Rajasthan Royals could not have got off to a better start. The in-form opener showed confidence in Yashaswi Jaiswal’s batting as he scored 26 runs in the first over.
An excellent direct hit from Andre Russell gave KKR the opening lead as Jos Buttler was dismissed.
However, Yashaswi Jaiswal was unstoppable with the bat and the RR opener scored the fastest ever fifty in IPL history. Rajasthan Royals were chasing, moving to 78/1 after 6 overs.
Rajasthan Royals brought up their century in the 10th over as Yashaswi Jaiswal continued his dominant aggressive batting performance. RR captain Sanju Samson also hit boundaries.
It took just 56 balls for Jaiswal-Samson to put on a century partnership for the second wicket. With over 6 overs to spare, Rajasthan Royals completed the chase as Yashaswi Jaiswal remained unbeaten on 98* as the visitors registered a comprehensive 9-wicket win in Kolkata.
Earlier in Kolkata, Rajasthan Royals won the toss and elected to field first. Openers Jason Roy and Rahmanullah Gurbaz were limited by RR’s strong pace attack. Shimron Hetmyer took a superb catch off the bowling of Trent Boult to put RR on top early in the innings.
Gurbaz then raised the scoring rate with two fine lofted maximums, but KKR opener Trent Boult was the second victim inside the powerplay.
The powerplay belonged to RR but KKR had two experienced batsmen in the form of skipper Nitish Rana and middle Venkatesh Iyer and they started to rebuild. After Ashwin scored 18 runs in the over, the duo formed a crucial partnership.
KKR were 76/2 at the half before Yuzvendra Chahal not only ended the partnership but also made history as the all-time leading IPL wicket-taker. Venkatesh Iyer continued his fearless batting performance to bring up KKR’s century in the 13th over.
KM Asif took the wicket by dismissing the dangerous Andre Russell caught at backward point. Venkatesh Iyer completed his half-century but it was Yuzvendra Chahal who shone in Kolkata to dismiss Iyer and Shardul Thakur.
Kolkata Knight Riders finished with a first innings score of 149/8 after Sandeep Sharma took a wicket on the last ball of the innings as the RR leg-spinner finished with a brilliant four-wicket haul.
Summary scores: Rajasthan Royals 151/1 (Yashaswi Jaiswal 98*, Sanju Samson 48*) Defeated Kolkata Knight Riders 149/8 (Venkatesh Iyer 57, Nitish Rana 22; Yuzvendra Chahal 4-25) for 9 wickets.
