Visakhapatnam: Rallies, awareness drives and plantation programs on Monday marked the World Environment Day (WED) with a focus on encouraging stakeholders to protect the environment.
As part of this, Visakhapatnam Port Authority Deputy Chairman Durgesh Kumar Dubey, Chief Vigilance Officer PSL Swamy, Environment Committee Member BS Shastri, Chief Engineer A Venu Prasad, etc. planted saplings as part of the Wed celebration.
Addressing the gathering, the Deputy Chairman emphasized the need to work towards this year’s theme of ‘Solution to Plastic Pollution – Beat Plastic Pollution’.
APEPDCL observed the day with an awareness programme. NREDCAP Chairman KK Raju, who was the chief guest, said that there are about 1.3 crore fuel-based vehicles in the state. ‘Go Electric’ campaign is being organized in all districts to prevent pollution from such vehicles. Raju said air and noise pollution can be reduced by introducing more e-vehicles. APEPDCL Directors D Chandram, AVV Surya Pratap, CGMs O Simhadri and Suman Kalyani were present on the occasion.
VMRDA Chairperson Akramamani Vijaya Nirmala planted indigenous saplings including neem and ravi on Kailasagiri hill on the occasion of the day. DFO Shanti Swarup and Officer Shyamala Shivani were present.
On the occasion of Vedday, District Collector A Mallikarjuna felicitated NTPC’s Project Head Simhadri Sanjay Kumar Sinha at the ‘Go Green, Breathe Clean’ program organized by the Andhra Pradesh Forest Department at Visakhapatnam for the company’s contribution in promoting green and sustainable. Development, Hatching of Olive Ridley Sea Turtles, Community Based Ecotourism Project in Anantagiri. At NTPC Simhadri, various programs were organized in line with the Mission Life (Lifestyle for Environment). SK Sinha administered the pledge and organized a green awareness walk.
Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL) celebrated World Environment Day by planting 50 saplings at HSL Colony. Also, the company organized a cycle rally and a three-day workshop at IIM (V) for senior executives to promote a clean, healthy and sustainable environment at WED. HSL employees were given a pledge to protect the environment and inspire fellow citizens about the importance of living an eco-friendly life.
Adani Gangavaram Port organized events to create awareness about the importance of environmental sustainability and highlight the theme ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’. As part of this, the port distributed reusable cloth and jute bags to various local bazaars and shops in the city.
Students of Aditya Degree College planted saplings in Gajuka College campus. College Wing Principals P Pradeep Kumar, M Sathyaprakash, Vice Principals S Srinu, RR Patrudu etc. exhorted the students to consider green initiatives to protect the environment. College NSS unit also participated.
Andhra Pradesh Forest Department, Visakhapatnam Division and Indira Gandhi Zoological Park jointly organized ‘Meet for Environment’. District Collector A Mallikarjuna, GVMC Commissioner CM Saikanth Verma, DFO, Visakhapatnam Ananth Shankar, Zoo Curators Nandani Salaria, Ravi Kiran and other officials participated in the function and discussed environmental issues and importance of conservation.
Visakhapatnam branch of Indian Red Cross Society organized Beach Cleanup Drive at RK Beach.
